At 105 mi from the city of Veracruz is located a mystic place surrounded of a matchless landscape. The Catemaco municipality is located at the seashore of a lagoon with small islands, in a region named Tuxtlas, in the denseness of the jungle where abound macaques and one of the main tourist attraction is located: a boat tour around the islands of Tanaxpillo and De los Monos.
The municipality has a wonderful landscape which deserves to be visited, the biodiversity of the jungle talk by itself. The region of Los Tuxtlas has nearly 300 volcanic cones; the lagoon of Catemaco has an extension of over 7500 hectares and a depth of 36 ft; Isla de Pajaros (Birds’ Island) take its name from its fame, a small portion of land strengthen by rocs and swamps, almost fully covered of cormorants and a large number of Great Egrets, Green and Great Blue Heron. In the seashores of these waters there are also dark turtles.
The ecological reserve of Nanciyaga is another of the main attractions, located at 4.5 mi from Catemaco, the visitor can do a lot of activities in its 40 hectares of jungle and lake. It also can be practiced the ecotourism with a refreshing walk where you’ll find exotic vegetation and a crocodiles park. Among other activities, the tourist can take a steam bath; get a mud mask, a mineral water shower, kayaks and crafts shopping.
